How Magic Transit Works

Cloudflare becomes the front door for your IP ranges. Your network behind it stays your own.

[1] Your IP ranges go on Cloudflare
Cloudflare announces your IP ranges to the internet over BGP, so traffic for them reaches the nearest Cloudflare data centre first.

[2] Attacks are dropped at the edge
Cloudflare inspects that traffic and drops DDoS attacks there, far away from your servers and your internet lines.

[3] Clean traffic comes to you
The good traffic is sent on to your network through GRE or IPsec tunnels, or a direct interconnect with Cloudflare.

Magic Transit Questions

It is a DDoS protection service for whole networks. Cloudflare announces your IP ranges and receives your traffic first, drops attacks, and sends the clean traffic on to you.

The normal Cloudflare service protects websites and web traffic. Magic Transit works at the network level, so it protects entire IP ranges and all kinds of traffic, not just websites.

Normally, yes. The smallest range Cloudflare can announce is a /24, which is 256 IP addresses, so you need at least one /24 of your own. If you do not have one, ask us and we will tell you what is possible.

You need a router or firewall that can run GRE or IPsec tunnels. If you want to use BGP over those tunnels, it needs to support that as well.
